Carter Yasutake was born into a family with a strong musical background. A native of Seattle, Washington spent his formative years listening to jazz and singing in his church choir. At age nine he took up the trumpet and later began piano lessons and began show to show strong aptitude towards music. At 11 he started playing in school and community jazz ensembles from middle school through high school, including lead trumpet in the prestigious Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble.

Deciding he wanted to be a professional musician, he moved to New York City to study at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Here he studied with such professionals as Jimmy Owens, Cecil Bridgewater, Eddie Henderson, Chris Albert, Bobby Sanabria and Billy Harper to name a few. Despite his relocation he would often return to his hometown and contribute to local bands such as Emerald City Jazz Ensemble, GoodyBagg, Big World Breaks the Gary Hammond Quintet and others.

In New York Carter has worked with such notable artists and ensembles as Irving Street Repertory, LCD Soundsystem. He is currently a member of Hercules and Love Affair and working on a project with members from that band. He is working on his own music project that reflects the music that has influenced him throughout his life.
